Peroxisomes: biochemistry, molecular biology and genetic diseases— a video programme for teaching students

2000

Abstract Peroxisome proliferation in rodent liver is a good biochemical marker of toxicology for several classes of xenobiotics, including fibrates; phthalates and adipates; or chlorophenoxy-acetate, a herbicide. Research in peroxisomes provides a good example of the integration of fields related to basic sciences and biomedical and industrial health. A 25 min video programme illustrates techniques involved in the characterization of purified peroxisomes ( Fig. 1 Download high-res image (70KB) Download full-size image Fig. 1 . Fasciola hepatica phenotypic characterization in Andean human endemic areas: Valley versus altiplanic patterns analysed in liver flukes from sheep fr…

2011

Fascioliasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. Of both species, F. hepatica is the only one described in the Americas, mainly transmitted by lymnaeid snail vectors of the Galba/. Fossaria group. Human fascioliasis endemic areas are mainly located in high altitude areas of Andean countries. Given the necessity to characterize F. hepatica populations involved, the phenotypic features of fasciolid adults infecting sheep present in human fascioliasis endemic areas were analysed in the Cajamarca Valley and Mantaro Valley (valley transmission patterns) and the northern Bolivian Altiplano (altiplanic transmission pattern). A computer image analysis…

Principal component analysis and cluster analysis for measuring the local organisation of human atrial fibrillation

2001

The distribution of atrial electrogram types has been proposed to characterise human atrial fibrillation. The aim of this study was to provide computer procedures for evaluating the local organisation of intracardiac recordings during AF as an alternative to off-line manual classification. Principal components analysis (PCA) reduced the data set to a few representative activations, and cluster analysis (CA) measured the average dissimilarity between consecutive activations of an intracardiac signal. The data set consisted of 106 bipolar signals recorded on 11 patients during electrophysiological studies for catheter ablation. Performances of PCA and CA in distinguishing between organised (t…

Understanding beginners' mistakes with Haskell

2015

AbstractThis article presents an overview of student difficulties in an introductory functional programming (FP) course taught in Haskell. The motivation for this study stems from our belief that many student difficulties can be alleviated by understanding the underlying causes of errors and by modifying the educational approach and, possibly, the teaching language accordingly. We analyze students' exercise submissions and categorize student errors according to compiler error messages and then manually according to the observed underlying cause. Our study complements earlier studies on the topic by applying computer and manual analysis while focusing on providing descriptive statistics of d…
